Stay Humble. Hustle Hard. Get ripped off?
Pulling out my soapbox for this one.
If you’ve ever seen this STAY HUMBLE / HUSTLE HARD graphic for sale in any store… chances are, it was ripped off from this designer. The image shown here is a screenshot from the original artist’s Dribbble page, posted over 6 years ago.
Let’s dive in…
In a quick social media world, it is so easy to screenshot a graphic and never credit the original author. No harm in that, right? Well, think again.
This print was posted, then probably reposted somewhere, then posted again, then (since it’s absolutely brilliant) recreated and resold without any profit to the artist. Not once, but hundreds of times. Here, here, and here are just 3 examples. The artist (Jennet Liaw) has seen it replicated so many times that she has a “Jennet Patrol” on various feeds alerting her when it’s replicated, again.
“It's gone so, so rogue since I let it out of my sketchbook :( Blessed to have a #jennetpatrol though, power to the ones who actually enjoy creating!”
—Jennet Liaw, on her original Dribbble post
There is no other point to this story other than to be aware when a graphic is used without credit to the original creator. We don’t need to stop reposting artwork, but as someone who makes art for a living, be mindful that you give credit where due.
Steps back down from soapbox.
